Isolation Transformers for Stage Audio: Eliminating Ground-Loop Hum

Multi-winding permalloy isolation transformers solved ground-loop hum and crosstalk in long-distance stage signal runs without low-frequency loss.

Background

A touring equipment rental company repeatedly encountered AC hum and high-frequency crosstalk between mixing consoles and stage amplifiers caused by ground potential differences. Generic isolators degraded low-frequency response.

Challenges

  • 1:1+1+1 multi-winding structure feeding two amplifier channels.
  • Less than 0.5dB attenuation at 20Hz.
  • Withstand drop and connector abuse during touring.
  • Short lead time with stock availability.

Our Solution

Permalloy multi-winding audio transformer in a shielded die-cast aluminium housing with XLR pass-through.

  • Independent grounding per output breaks the ground loop.
  • Large core cross-section avoids saturation; 20Hz attenuation within 0.3dB.
  • Epoxy potting and die-cast housing resist drop and insertion stress.

Results

  • Ground-loop hum and crosstalk eliminated in field tests.
  • Response deviation within ±0.4dB from 20Hz to 20kHz.
  • Two years of continuous supply with repair rate below 0.5%.
